WHO WE ARE

We are Dyslexia Nigeria

Dyslexia Nigeria is a non-profit charity fully registered in Nigeria. Our vision is a world where individuals with dyslexia can attain their full potential.

Dyslexia Nigeria educates, empowers and convenes stakeholders concerned with dyslexia in Nigeria to create an environment where individuals with dyslexia can thrive. We do this through a range of services including dyslexia screening, diagnostic dyslexia assessments, teacher training, coaching, specialist tuition, sale of relevant resources, and awareness efforts.

The founding premise behind our launch was one that our MD, Dr. Adrienne Tikolo, has always believed in – that education is not about preparing children for the exams we set ahead of them, but about preparing children for the lives ahead of them and equipping them with the tools they need to navigate the world.

At Dyslexia Nigeria, we have been dedicated and committed to realizing this premise, and our vision. We have reached over 500 schools, creating awareness about dyslexia: over 350+ individuals have improved life outcomes because our diagnostic assessments identified their dyslexia and recommended steps to remediation; we have empowered more than 20 youth to become specialist dyslexia teachers, and we have trained about 1,500 people to identify and support individuals with dyslexia in schools and in the workplace.

Post-COVID, we are bolder, more deliberate and more innovative because we want to achieve more and we want to create more impact of a reach commensurate to the prevalence of dyslexia in Nigeria. This has seen us partnering with an Online Education Platform to digitize our training; launching a video mini-series to drive awareness, and partnering with associations like the Association of International School Educators of Nigeria to reach more schools, parents and students amongst others.

OUR SERVICES

For Schools

wavy-lines-1

Screening

We offer Universal Screening to help schools identify at-risk pupils before they fall into reading failure.

Diagnostic Dyslexia Assessments

With this assessment, our team can diagnose dyslexia. This is a full assessment of underlying ability, and attainments in reading, writing and cognitive processing skills, such as memory, processing speed, and phonological processing. The diagnostic assessment is carried out at our Centre by trained assessors. The assessment is accompanied by an in-depth written report.

Working Memory Test

Working memory is a type of short-term memory that allows us to store and manipulate temporary information and carry out complex cognitive tasks like comprehension, reasoning, reading or calculations. This test offers an array of exercises designed to identify and improve any challenges with working memory.

Test of Visual Stress

Visual stress, which affects 15 – 20% of the population, hinders children’s literacy development and is a barrier to efficient and enjoyable reading. This text gives an accurate and reliable indication of the existence and severity of visual stress and identifies those who may benefit from using coloured overlays or tinted lenses to combat the symptoms of visual stress.

Test of Cognitive Ability

This text provides a robust, standardized measure of cognitive reasoning ability. It gives an invaluable insight into your pupils’ ability to reason across four distinct batteries: verbal, non-verbal, mathematical and spatial, as compared to the national average, allowing you to address patterns and adapt teaching methods to suit individual or group needs.

Exam Access Arrangement Assessment

This is a comprehensive screening assessment for exam access arrangements.

School Support Services

We support schools through a variety of services including providing advice on how to create dyslexia-friendly classrooms, organizing parent speaking sessions, providing consultancy services to develop operating procedures, creating support strategies, and creating or reviewing policies to promote dyslexia-friendly practices in their teaching and learning environments.

Training

We offer open, on-site, online and bespoke trainings. Please see attached training brochure.

Awareness Campaigns

Dyslexia Nigeria gives free awareness talks at schools to help create a general awareness of dyslexia amongst students and staff. Talks typically last between 10 – 15 minutes and are usually delivered at school assembly times.

Awareness Building

We provide training opportunities for staff, and free awareness sessions.

Pre-employment Screening

Dyslexia Nigeria works with employers to encourage a positive and enabling working environment for dyslexic employees; one that helps them give their best and achieve their full potential in the workplace. We help integrate pre-employment dyslexia screening in the recruitment process, to identify if a potential employee may have dyslexia and to recommend reasonable adjustments.

Diagnostic Dyslexia Assessments

These examine underlying ability, attainments in reading and writing, and cognitive processing skills such as memory, processing speed and phonological processing, all designed to spot your gems and give them the tools to excel. Assessments are accompanied by an in-depth report.

Workplace Needs Assessments

Some workers dyslexic or not, may experience challenges with their executive functions, which limit their performance in the workplace. This may include challenges with weak memory, difficulty getting and staying organised, difficulty prioritising tasks and seeing tasks through to completion; inability to concentrate and challenges multitasking. Through a Workplace Needs Assessment, we can identify specific areas of difficulty with executive functioning as relates to job descriptions and roles, and recommend coping strategies and therapies to help enhance cognitive ability.

Leadership Cognitive Enhancement

With our understanding of the brain, Dyslexia Nigeria supports organizational leaders and executives in attaining high mental functionality, critical for enhanced productivity. Our cognitive enhancement increases the ability to process information quickly and accurately, demonstrate mental resilience and solve complex problems. We help executives unlock their brain power for augmented leadership skills.
